Professional Headshots in Switzerland: CV Photo Rules, Prices and Tips

Switzerland is one of the countries where the photo on your CV still matters most. Here’s what Swiss recruiters expect, how it differs between regions, what a photographer costs in the main cities, and how to get a professional headshot without one.
Do you need a photo on your CV in Switzerland?
There is no legal obligation, and Switzerland has no general law on discrimination in hiring comparable to Germany’s AGG, so employers may ask for one. In practice, a photo is customary in all three language regions:
- German-speaking Switzerland. The ZHAW’s career services write that, although not legally required, a photo is “very common in Switzerland and expected”. jobs.ch notes that some large companies now say a photo isn’t needed, but advises including one unless the job ad says otherwise.
- French-speaking Switzerland (Romandie). jobup.ch calls the photo “common practice, particularly in Romandie”, and the canton of Vaud’s career guidance office describes a good-quality photo as “usually required”.
- Italian-speaking Switzerland (Ticino). Ticino’s career guidance office says the photo is not mandatory and should be simple, on a neutral background. Most Swiss applications still include one.
What a Swiss CV photo should look like
Swiss career services agree on the basics:
| Criterion | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Placement | At the start of the CV, or on a cover page |
| Size | About 4 × 5 cm; slightly larger is fine |
| Age | No more than a year old |
| Colour | Colour rather than black and white |
| Background | Plain and neutral, white or light grey |
| Framing | Head and shoulders, cropped at the shoulders |
| Expression | Friendly; a smile is welcome |
| Avoid | Passport-style photos, photo-booth pictures, holiday snaps and raw selfies |
The ZHAW recommends a professional photographer. The point is the result: a portrait that looks professional, recent and like you. For clothing, follow our guide on what to wear. In finance, law and consulting, Swiss dress codes remain fairly formal.

LinkedIn in Switzerland
LinkedIn is the leading professional network in Switzerland. DataReportal counted 5.3 million registered LinkedIn members in Switzerland in late 2025, around 59% of the population, a figure that includes inactive accounts. XING, once popular in German-speaking Switzerland, closed its Zurich team in 2023 and now focuses on recruiting in Germany.
Use the same headshot on your CV and your LinkedIn profile, so recruiters recognise you from one to the other. See our LinkedIn profile picture tips.
Your photos and Swiss data protection
Before uploading your face to any app, it’s worth knowing what the revised Federal Act on Data Protection (nFADP, in force since 1 September 2023) says:
- A photo of you is personal data. It becomes sensitive biometric data when it is processed to uniquely identify you, for example with face matching.
- A service must tell you which countries your data is sent to and how it is protected.
- The Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) considers that the law applies directly to AI, and asks for transparency about how AI systems work and what data they use.
So check three things in any headshot app: where your photos go, how long they are kept, and whether they are used to train AI. With LinkPro, your selfies are not kept on our servers after generation, your headshots are stored on your device, and your images are never used to train AI models or to recognise you. You can delete your account and all your photos from the app. Details are in our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions
Is a photo mandatory on a Swiss CV?
No, there is no legal obligation, and some large companies now say a photo isn't needed. But it remains customary across German-, French- and Italian-speaking Switzerland, and career services such as the ZHAW's describe it as expected. Unless the job ad says otherwise, include one.
What size should a CV photo be in Switzerland?
About 4 × 5 cm at the start of the CV, centred or at the edge, according to jobs.ch. A slightly larger photo is fine. It should be in colour, on a neutral background and no more than a year old.
How much does a CV photo cost in Zurich or Geneva?
Published prices in October 2026 started at CHF 99 for a quick session in Zurich and CHF 80 for a CV portrait in Geneva. Packages with several retouched photos cost CHF 150 to 260, and premium shoots up to CHF 480.
Can I use an AI headshot on my Swiss CV?
Yes, as long as it is a realistic, recent likeness of you. Career advisers discourage raw selfies and photo-booth pictures because they look improvised; what matters is a portrait that looks professional and natural. It cannot be used for a passport or ID card, which require biometric photos; Swiss passport photos are taken at the cantonal passport office.
Is LinkPro available in French, German and Italian?
Yes. The LinkPro web app and website are available in French, German, Italian and English, for all of Switzerland's main language regions.
