For years, the only way to get a professional headshot was to book a photographer. AI headshot apps now offer a faster, cheaper alternative from your phone. Both have their place. Here’s an honest look at cost, quality and when to choose each.

What a photographer costs

Published prices from studios in October 2026 give a good idea of the market.

In Switzerland, a basic CV photo starts at around CHF 50 to 120: for example CHF 50 for one photo at a Basel studio, CHF 80 for a CV portrait with one retouched image in Geneva, CHF 120 for a 20-minute session with two retouched photos in Lausanne. Packages with several retouched images cost CHF 150 to 260, and premium shoots CHF 350 to 480. Read more in our guide to professional headshots in Switzerland.

In Germany, StepStone puts the average application photo at €50 to 150. Studios in Munich and Cologne start around €59, Berlin around €85 and Hamburg around €120, with business portraits going up to several hundred euros. See professional headshots in Germany.

On top of the price, count the time: finding a studio, booking a slot, travelling and waiting for the retouched files.

What an AI headshot costs

AI headshot services cost a fraction of a studio session. Web services typically sell one-time packs of a few dozen headshots, while mobile apps tend to use weekly or yearly subscriptions. Many offer a free preview or a free generator so you can judge the quality first.

With LinkPro, your first session is a free studio preview with 3 watermarked headshots, without an account. You can then buy a single headshot as a one-time purchase, which unlocks one HD headshot without watermark and with no subscription, or choose LinkPro Unlimited, a weekly subscription with unlimited headshots, restyles and new sessions that you can cancel anytime. Prices are shown in the web app in your local currency.

Is an AI headshot as good as a real photo?

It can be. In a 2024 survey of 1,087 recruiters by the software company Ringover, 76.5% preferred an AI-generated headshot in a blind test, and only 39.5% could tell which photos were AI. But the same survey found that 88% of recruiters want candidates to disclose AI-generated photos.

Not everyone is convinced. A May 2026 application guide from an office of Germany’s Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) warns that AI-edited photos “often look artificial” and that recruiters “frequently notice and react sceptically”. The lesson isn’t to avoid AI. Avoid headshots that look fake: over-smoothed skin, a younger face, a different hairline.

When to choose a photographer

  • Passport and ID photos. These must follow biometric rules and be taken at the authority or by an approved service. AI headshots can’t be used.
  • A personal-branding shoot. If you need a series of photos in different outfits, at your office or on location for a website, a photographer is worth it.
  • A very traditional employer. Some conservative sectors and employers still expect a classic studio portrait.
  • You want to be coached. A good photographer directs your pose and expression in real time.

When to choose an AI headshot

  • You need it today. A new job, a conference profile, a LinkedIn update: you get results in minutes.
  • You want to try different looks. Compare a corporate and a creative style, a light and a dark backdrop, before you decide.
  • You want to update regularly. Refresh your headshot when your hair or glasses change, without booking a new session.
  • You don’t like being photographed. Many people are more relaxed taking a few selfies at home.

How to get a natural-looking AI headshot

  1. Start from good selfies. Soft light, eye level, recent. LinkPro guides you through 8 poses and checks your distance, angle and light live. See how to take a professional headshot.
  2. Choose a style that fits your field. Formal for law or finance, business casual or creative for tech and media. See what to wear.
  3. Pick the result that looks most like you, not the most flattering one. Your features, hair and age should match how you look in a video call.
  4. Ask others. Share a poll so friends or colleagues vote for the most natural and professional result.
  5. Be transparent if asked. Saying “it’s an AI portrait made from my own photos” is perfectly fine.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI headshots as good as a professional photographer?

A good AI headshot can be hard to tell apart from a studio portrait. In a 2024 survey of 1,087 recruiters by Ringover, 76.5% preferred an AI headshot in a blind test and only 39.5% identified AI correctly. A photographer still offers human direction, real locations and photos you can use for official documents.

How much does a professional headshot cost?

In Switzerland, published prices for a CV or business portrait start around CHF 50 to 120 and reach CHF 150 to 480 for larger packages. In Germany, StepStone puts the average for an application photo at €50 to 150, with premium business shoots costing more.

Can I use an AI headshot on my CV?

Yes, if it looks like you and looks natural. Some career advisers warn that heavily edited photos look artificial, so choose a realistic result, keep your real features and age, and be ready to say it was made with AI if you are asked.

Can I use an AI headshot for my passport or ID card?

No. Official ID photos must meet biometric rules and, in Germany and Switzerland, are taken digitally at the authority or by an approved service. LinkPro's terms also say not to use its headshots as identity photos.

When is a photographer the better choice?

For passport and ID photos, for a personal-branding shoot with several outfits and locations, and when you apply to a very traditional employer that expects a classic studio portrait.
