Zurich is Switzerland’s largest job market, and also one of the places where the photo on your CV is most taken for granted. Here is what employers in the city expect, which style suits banking, insurance and tech, what local studios charge, and how to get a professional headshot without booking one.

Do you need a photo on your CV in Zurich?

Not by law, but in practice yes. The ZHAW’s career services write that a photo is “very common in Switzerland and expected”, and jobs.ch advises including one unless the job ad says otherwise, while noting that some large companies now say a photo isn’t needed. Zurich follows these German-speaking Swiss norms. National rules, size and format are covered in our guide to professional headshots in Switzerland.

If you’re new to the country, note that Zurich is very international: at the end of 2025, 33.9% of the city’s 452,421 residents were foreign nationals, according to the city’s statistics office. Many people applying here are expats, and the Swiss habit of adding a photo applies to an English-language CV too. When a company’s careers portal or ad asks for no photo, leave it out.

What CV photo style works in Zurich

Zurich’s economy leans heavily on two sectors with different dress codes:

  • Finance. The financial centre of Zurich (cantons of Zurich, Schwyz and Zug) employed 97,300 people in full-time equivalents in 2021, about one job in ten in the region, and 68% of those jobs were in the city itself. Financial firms generated 27% of the city’s economic output, according to the canton’s 2023/2024 financial centre report. Banking, insurance, wealth management and the law and audit firms around them still expect a classic, formal portrait.
  • Tech. The canton counted about 70,800 people working in ICT in 2022, and names Google Research, Meta, Avaloq and Doodle among the companies based in or working from the Zurich area. Engineering and product teams dress more casually, and a stiff suit can look out of place.

How much does a CV photo cost in Zurich?

Prices published by Zurich-area studios, October 2026:

Thomas Hinder (Oerlikon)About 30 min, 1 high-end edited photo; with a creative background, 2 photosCHF 89 (promotion, regularly CHF 139); CHF 149
foto-shooting.ch (Oerlikon)15 min, 1 photo, no retouching / 30 min, 2 retouched photos / 60 min, 5 retouched photosCHF 99 / 169 / 259
Studiolounge (Seefeld)25 to 30 min, 1 retouched photo / 45 to 50 min, 2 outfits, 2 retouched photosCHF 149 / 199
Freshpixel (Wallisellen)20 min, retouching extra / 30 min, 2 retouched photos / 60 min, 4 retouched photosCHF 120 / 220 / 480

So in Zurich, expect CHF 49 to 149 for a short session with one edited photo, CHF 169 to 259 for two to five retouched photos, and up to CHF 480 for a longer portrait shoot. Read the package carefully: “edited” can mean colour and light correction only, with skin retouching charged extra.

Then add the costs that aren’t on the price list. Most studios work by appointment only, sometimes booked online, and slots fill up: one Seefeld studio announced it was closed from 5 to 16 October 2026. Add the trip across town and the wait for your files, from the same day to one or two working days. For a full comparison, read AI headshot vs photographer.

A CV photo without a photographer

If you need a headshot today, between two interviews or before a recruiter call, LinkPro turns your phone into a studio:

  1. Take 8 guided selfies. On-device face detection checks your distance, angle and light live.
  2. Direct your shoot. Choose your field, a studio or office backdrop and a formal or business casual outfit, so a banker and a software engineer get different results.
  3. Get your headshots in seconds, pick the most natural one and save it in HD.
  4. Ask friends or colleagues to vote with a poll link before you apply.

Your first session is free, with 3 watermarked previews and no account. To keep one in HD without watermark, buy a single headshot as a one-time purchase, with no subscription, or choose LinkPro Unlimited, a weekly subscription you can cancel anytime. LinkPro is a web app: open it in your browser at app.linkproapp.ai, on your phone or a computer, in English, German, French and Italian.

Be demanding with the result: your photo must look natural and like you, because the recruiter will meet you in person. Some career advisers warn that heavily AI-edited photos can look artificial, so choose the most realistic headshot, not the most flattering one. Your selfies are not kept on our servers after generation, your headshots are stored on your device, and your images are never used to train AI models. You can delete your account and photos from the app; see our privacy policy. A LinkPro headshot can’t be used for a passport, ID card or residence permit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a photo on my CV to apply for jobs in Zurich?

It is not a legal requirement, but it is customary in German-speaking Switzerland. The ZHAW's career services describe a photo as very common and expected, and jobs.ch advises including one unless the job ad says otherwise. If a company's application portal or ad tells you not to send a photo, follow that.

How much does a CV photo cost in Zurich?

Published prices in October 2026 ranged from CHF 49 (a 5-minute session with one edited photo for apprentices and interns at Select Fotostudio) to CHF 99 to 149 for a standard short session, CHF 169 to 259 for packages with two to five retouched photos, and up to CHF 480 for a one-hour portrait shoot.

What should I wear for a CV photo for a bank or insurer in Zurich?

Dress as you would for the interview: a dark suit or blazer with a plain shirt or blouse, on a grey or white studio background. Finance is Zurich's signature sector and its dress codes remain fairly formal. For tech and startups, a smart shirt or knit without a blazer usually fits better.

I'm an expat applying in English. Should my CV still have a photo?

As a rule of thumb, yes, when you apply to a Swiss employer: the Swiss custom applies whatever language your CV is in. Some international companies say they don't need a photo; their job ad or portal will tell you. A clean, professional headshot is also what you want on LinkedIn.

Can I use an AI headshot for my Swiss ID or residence permit?

No. Passports, ID cards and other official documents need biometric photos taken to official rules; Swiss passport photos are taken at the cantonal passport office. An AI headshot is for your CV, LinkedIn and professional profiles only.
