CV photo in Basel: prices, studios and tips

Basel is Switzerland’s life-sciences capital and a city where tens of thousands of people cross a border to get to work. That shapes who reads your CV and which kind of photo fits. Here is what Basel employers expect, what local studios charge and how to get a headshot without booking one.
Do you need a photo on your CV in Basel?
Not by law, but in practice yes. As in the rest of Switzerland, the ZHAW’s career services describe a CV photo as “very common in Switzerland and expected”, and jobs.ch advises including one unless the job ad says otherwise. Size, placement and the national rules are covered in our guide to professional headshots in Switzerland.
What makes Basel different is its cross-border workforce. According to the canton’s statistics office, about 35,000 cross-border commuters worked in Basel-Stadt on average in 2024, around 18% of all jobs, and the number reached about 36,700 in the third quarter of 2025. In chemistry and pharma, more than 30% of employees commute from abroad, mostly from Germany and France.
If you are one of them, remember that the Swiss habit applies. In Germany the photo is voluntary under the AGG (see our Germany guide), but a Basel employer reads your application with Swiss expectations. Include a photo, unless the ad or the company’s online form clearly leaves it out.
What CV photo style works in Basel
Basel’s economy leans heavily on a few sectors. According to the canton, life sciences generated around 40% of Basel-Stadt’s value added in 2024 with about 10% of jobs, against roughly 2% of jobs for Switzerland as a whole. Novartis, Roche, Lonza, Bayer, Syngenta, BeOne Medicines and Moderna have their headquarters or major group functions in the city. Finance also matters: the Bank for International Settlements has its headquarters in Basel, UBS runs group functions there, and insurers such as Helvetia Baloise, Pax and Sympany are based in the city. DSV, DHL and Rhenus run global logistics operations from Basel, and Coop and Manor have their headquarters there.
That mix calls for slightly different photos:
| Sector | Outfit | Background and mood |
|---|---|---|
| Pharma, biotech: research, lab, regulatory | Neat business casual: plain shirt or blouse, optional jacket | Plain light grey or white; friendly and approachable |
| Pharma: management, commercial, legal | Blazer or suit, plain shirt | Plain neutral background or a discreet office |
| Banking, insurance, BIS | Dark suit or blazer, tie optional | Plain grey or white; calm and formal |
| Logistics, retail and trade headquarters | Business casual, jacket for management roles | Neutral or office backdrop |
Whatever the sector, keep the Swiss basics: head and shoulders, recent, in colour, with a friendly expression. Because many teams in Basel mix nationalities, use the same photo on your CV and your LinkedIn profile so recruiters recognise you across jobs.ch, LinkedIn and company portals. Frequently asked questions
I live in Germany or France and apply for a job in Basel. Do I need a photo?
Swiss practice applies, not the rules of your home country. In Germany the AGG makes the photo voluntary, but in Switzerland it is customary and career services describe it as expected. Unless the job ad or the online form says otherwise, include one. You are far from alone: Basel-Stadt counted about 36,700 cross-border commuters in the third quarter of 2025.
How much does a CV photo cost in Basel?
Published prices in October 2026: CHF 50 for a 10-minute session with 1 edited photo at Fotoman, CHF 64 to 164 at foto-mimmo, CHF 99 to 330 at Yulia Schweizer in Rheinfelden and CHF 95 to 375 at Patrick Kunz in Münchenstein. Most basic sessions with one to four retouched photos cost CHF 50 to 164.
What should I wear for a CV photo for a pharma job in Basel?
There is no single pharma dress code. For research, lab and technical roles, a neat business-casual look (plain shirt or blouse, optionally a jacket) usually fits. For management, commercial, finance and legal roles, wear a blazer or suit. Avoid logos and busy patterns, and look at how people in your target team present themselves on LinkedIn.
Can I use an AI headshot to apply for a job in Basel?
Yes, if it is a realistic, recent likeness of you. There is no rule against it, but some career advisers in Germany warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial, so choose the most natural result. It cannot be used for a passport or ID card, which require biometric photos.
Do Basel studios charge extra for retouching?
Often, yes. In October 2026 Fotoman charged CHF 10 per extra edited photo and CHF 15 for skin retouching, Yulia Schweizer CHF 35 per extra retouched image, and make-up was extra at several studios. Check what is included before you book.
