Geneva hires for private banks, commodity traders, industry and some 38 international organisations, and each has its own application habits. Here is when a photo is expected, which style suits which employer, what Geneva studios charge and how to get a headshot without booking one.

Do you need a photo on your CV in Geneva?

For most employers, yes. Swiss law doesn’t require a photo, but it is customary across the country, and the job portal jobup.ch calls it “common practice, particularly in Romandie”. Unless the job ad says otherwise, include one. Size, placement and national rules are in our guide to professional headshots in Switzerland.

International organisations are the big exception to check. The UN Secretariat’s applicant guide describes an application made entirely through the Inspira online system: a profile, your education, experience, a motivation statement and supporting documents such as diplomas. The only photo it mentions is a copy of your passport’s data page, for identity checks. Other organisations, from specialised agencies to NGOs, use their own forms and rules, so follow each vacancy’s instructions. A good headshot still matters there, because recruiters and future colleagues will look you up on LinkedIn.

Geneva is also a cross-border job market. According to the Federal Statistical Office, quoted by the ATS news agency, Geneva counted 112,092 foreign cross-border workers in the third quarter of 2024. If you live in France and apply to a Geneva employer, write your CV the Swiss way, photo included.

What CV photo style works in Geneva

The canton’s November 2025 report on its economy picks out five sectors that made up 47% of Geneva’s GDP in 2022: wholesale trade including commodity trading (17.6%), banking and finance (12.6%), industries (11.3%), IT and digital (2.9%) and life sciences (2.5%). On top of that, the cantonal statistics office counted 29,011 people working in 38 international organisations in March 2025, and 33,285 including permanent missions and consulates.

Whatever the employer, keep the Swiss basics: head and shoulders, recent, in colour, with a friendly expression. If you apply in both French and English, use the same headshot on your CV, your jobup.ch or jobs.ch profile and LinkedIn. For outfits, see what to wear for a professional headshot.

A CV photo without a photographer

If an application deadline is close, LinkPro turns your phone into a studio:

  1. Take 8 guided selfies. On-device face detection checks your distance, angle and light live.
  2. Direct your shoot. Choose your field, a plain studio or office backdrop, and a formal or business-casual outfit.
  3. Get your headshots in seconds, pick the most natural one and save it in HD.
  4. Let friends or colleagues vote with a poll link before you apply.

Your first session is free, with 3 watermarked previews and no account. To keep one in HD without watermark, buy a single headshot as a one-time purchase, with no subscription, or choose LinkPro Unlimited, a weekly subscription you can cancel anytime. LinkPro is a web app: open it in your browser at app.linkproapp.ai, on your phone or a computer, in English, French, German and Italian.

Be demanding with the result. Some career advisers, notably in Germany, warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial and that recruiters often notice. Keep the image that looks most like you, with your real features, hair and glasses. An AI headshot cannot be used for a passport or ID card. Weighing the options? Read AI headshot vs photographer.

Your selfies are not kept on LinkPro servers after generation, your headshots are stored on your device, and your images are never used to train AI models. You can delete your account and photos from the app. Details are in our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a photo on my CV in Geneva?

Usually, yes. There is no legal obligation, but jobup.ch describes the CV photo as common practice, particularly in French-speaking Switzerland. Banks, trading houses and most private employers will expect one unless the job ad says otherwise.

Do UN jobs in Geneva need a CV photo?

Not for the UN Secretariat. According to its applicant guide, you apply through the Inspira online form (profile, education, experience, motivation statement), and the only photo it mentions is a copy of your passport's data page for identity checks. Other organisations use their own systems, so follow the instructions in each vacancy.

How much does a CV photo cost in Geneva?

Published prices in October 2026: from CHF 80 at Christian Bromley, CHF 100 to 180 at RDM Studio, CHF 100 to 240 at Studio Regard, CHF 120 at Kenilias, CHF 200 at Lucie Poirier and CHF 165 to 255 at JP Photographies in Carouge. A short CV session typically costs CHF 80 to 120.

I live in France and work in Geneva. Which CV rules apply?

Those of the Swiss employer. Geneva had about 112,000 foreign cross-border workers in the third quarter of 2024, so recruiters are used to French applicants, but they still read a CV with Swiss habits: a recent, professional photo is expected unless the ad says otherwise.

Can I use an AI headshot for a job in Geneva?

Yes, if it is a realistic, recent likeness of you. There is no rule against it, but some career advisers warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial, so pick the most natural result. It cannot be used for a passport or ID card, which require biometric photos.
