CV photo in Lyon: prices, studios and tips

Lyon is France’s leading industrial metropolis by its own count, a pharmaceutical and chemistry hub, and a city where most jobs are in services. That mix, and a large student population, shapes what a good CV photo looks like. Here is when a photo makes sense, which style fits which employer, what Lyon studios charge, and a faster alternative.

Do you need a photo on your CV in Lyon?

Legally, no. No French law requires a photo on a CV. Service-Public, the French administration’s official information site, states that the information requested from a candidate “must only allow their skills to be assessed”, and lists physical appearance among the 25 grounds of discrimination prohibited at work, recruitment included. Indeed’s French career guide agrees that a CV photo is “in no way an obligation”.

If you are relocating to Lyon, for example to a global pharma or chemistry group, separate two cases. For French-language CVs sent through LinkedIn, Indeed, APEC or France Travail, a good photo is a plus but not expected. For English-language applications to an international group, follow the ad and the company’s careers site. In both cases, recruiters will look at your LinkedIn profile, so use the same photo there.

What CV photo style works in Lyon

According to Insee’s 2023 census, the city of Lyon had 519,127 inhabitants and 343,012 jobs:

• 60.2% of jobs were in commerce, transport and services, 29.4% in public administration, education, health and social work, and 6.9% in industry.
• Managers and professionals (cadres) held 37.1% of the jobs located in Lyon, a high share: many applications are for qualified, office-based roles.
• Unemployment (census definition, ages 15 to 64) was 11.1% in 2023.

ONLYLYON Invest, the metropolitan investment agency, describes Lyon as France’s first industrial metropolis, with 80,000 industrial jobs (Métropole de Lyon, 2025), and its second innovation hub, with more than 13,000 researchers. Two sectors stand out:

• Health and life sciences. The agency lists Sanofi (four R&D and production sites in the Lyon region), bioMérieux (headquarters and several sites), Boehringer Ingelheim (French headquarters since 2018) and Merck (French headquarters). The Lyon-Gerland biodistrict counts about 5,000 life sciences professionals.
• Chemistry and energy. The Vallée de la Chimie, south of the city, has 2,500 researchers and 8 R&D centres. Syensqo runs its largest R&D centre worldwide in the Lyon region, and TotalEnergies has an R&D centre and a refinery there.

The region also counts 3.9 million inhabitants, 6% of them students (Opale, 2026), so many applicants are looking for a first job or an internship.

Be honest about the result: the photo must look natural and like you today.
