Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, home to three DAX companies and, according to the city’s economic development agency, the largest Japanese business community in the European Union. Fashion, telecoms and corporate headquarters all hire here, and each has its own idea of a good application photo. Here is what Düsseldorf studios charge, which style fits which employer, and how to get a natural photo without booking a session.

Do you need a photo on your CV in Düsseldorf?

Legally, no. Since the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) of 2006, a photo on a German application is voluntary. The Federal Employment Agency says the photo is “no longer compulsory, but still customary in many industries”, because most recruiters still want to see who they are dealing with. Size, placement and the rules on AI photos are covered in our guide to application photos in Germany.

Düsseldorf is unusually international: the city counts 184 nationalities and 4,573 international companies. If you are one of the many expats here:

  • German-language applications to German companies, the public sector or the state government: include a professional photo unless the ad says otherwise.
  • English-language applications to international headquarters: follow the ad and the company’s career site. If they ask for an anonymised CV or a CV without a photo, leave it out.

Recruiters will also look you up on LinkedIn or XING, so use the same photo there.

What CV photo style works in Düsseldorf

The city’s economic development agency counts 419,185 people subject to social insurance working in Düsseldorf, 63% of whom commute in from elsewhere. 35% hold a university degree, and 36% work in knowledge-intensive services. Its February 2026 data brochure names three DAX companies based in the city (GEA Group, Henkel and Rheinmetall), along with LEG Immobilien, Gerresheimer and Douglas. Industry is not an afterthought either: with about 45,000 industrial jobs, Düsseldorf is the second-largest industrial location in North Rhine-Westphalia, and the city map in the brochure marks a Mercedes-Benz plant and the Vodafone Campus.

Two sectors stand out. The agency counts 32,403 people working in IT and communications in 2024, and 32,868 in fashion and beauty in 2025, with around 600 showrooms opening for the Düsseldorf Fashion Days.

The job market is still hiring. In September 2026, the Düsseldorf employment agency reported an unemployment rate of 8.2% and 4,944 open positions, and said demand for workers remains high compared with the rest of North Rhine-Westphalia, with many new openings in transport and logistics.

  2. Direct your shoot. Choose your field, a studio or office backdrop and a formal or business casual outfit, for example formal for a corporate headquarters and business casual for a telecoms team.
  3. Get your headshots in seconds, pick the most natural one and save it in HD.
  4. Let friends or colleagues vote with a poll link before you send your application.

Your first session is free, with 3 watermarked previews and no account. To keep one in HD without watermark, buy a single headshot as a one-time purchase, with no subscription, or choose LinkPro Unlimited, a weekly subscription you can cancel anytime. LinkPro is a web app: open it in your browser at app.linkproapp.ai, on your phone or a computer, in English, German, French and Italian. Your selfies are not kept on our servers after generation, your headshots are stored on your device, and your images are never used to train AI models (see our privacy policy).

Be honest with yourself about the result: the photo must look natural and like you today. Some German career advisers warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial, so for a conservative employer, a classic studio photo may still be the safer choice. For a side-by-side comparison, read AI headshot vs photographer. A LinkPro photo cannot be used for a passport or ID card, which require biometric photos. Applying up the Rhine in Cologne as well? Frequently asked questions

How much does a CV photo cost in Düsseldorf?

In October 2026, Düsseldorf studios published entry offers from €29 (MDFotoStudio, Picturemakers) and €39 (Fotostudio im Klemensviertel). One retouched photo costs €49 to €79 at Picturemakers, ARTESFOTO or Klemensviertel, and €149 at Sönke Peters Photographie. Packages with two or three retouched photos cost €99 to €129.

Do I need a photo on my CV to apply for jobs in Düsseldorf?

No. Since the AGG of 2006, a photo on a German application is voluntary and a job ad may not explicitly require one. The Federal Employment Agency still describes it as customary in many industries. International employers sometimes ask for an English CV without a photo: follow the ad.

What should I wear for a CV photo at Henkel, Rheinmetall or a consultancy?

Corporate headquarters, consulting firms, law firms and banks expect a classic look: a dark blazer, a plain shirt or blouse and a calm grey or light background. For telecoms and IT, business casual works. In fashion and beauty, you can show more personal style, as long as the photo stays professional.

Can I use an AI headshot for a job in Düsseldorf?

There is no rule against it, but the photo must look natural and show you as you are today. Some German career advisers warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial, and conservative employers tend to be less open than tech firms. Choose the most realistic result, and never use it for a passport or ID.
