Cologne combines two very different employer cultures: Germany’s second-largest insurance location and the country’s leading TV city. A photo that works for an insurer can look stiff for a production company, and the reverse. Here is what studios in Cologne charge, which style fits which employer, and how to get a natural photo without booking a session.

Do you need a photo on your CV in Cologne?

Legally, no. Since the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) of 2006, a photo on a German application is voluntary, and a job ad may not require one. In practice, the Federal Employment Agency calls it “still customary in many industries”, and many Cologne employers still expect it in a German-language application. The full rules (size, placement, AI photos) are in our guide to application photos in Germany.

If you are applying in English to an international company, follow the job ad: some ask for an anonymised application, in which case you leave the photo out. Whatever you send, recruiters will also look you up on LinkedIn or XING, so use the same photo there.

What CV photo style works in Cologne

Insurance. According to KölnBusiness, the city’s economic development agency, Cologne is Germany’s second-largest insurance location, with about 24,000 employees. More than 50 German insurers and reinsurers have their headquarters in the city, including DEVK, Gothaer, HDI-Gerling and DKV, and international groups such as AXA, Zurich and General Reinsurance have a presence there.

Media and IT. The City of Cologne’s statistics office counted about 57,100 employees in information and communication in March 2025, the city’s fourth-largest sector. IT services account for 29,600 of them. Film, TV and radio production employed 8,500 people, and broadcasters 7,800, with WDR, RTL, VOX, ProSieben, Sat.1, n-tv and Deutschlandradio among them. Between 2016 and 2025, production jobs grew by 48.2%, faster than in any other German city studied, Berlin included. The report also notes that, unlike in IT, most people working in Cologne’s media sector do not have a university degree.

For a media job, a more personal photo is fine, but it should still look professional: sharp, well lit, head and shoulders, no holiday snaps. For an insurer, stay classic. If you are applying to both, get two versions. Our guide on what to wear for a professional headshot goes into colours and fabrics.

A CV photo without a photographer

If you need a photo tonight, or want both a classic and a more personal version without paying for two packages, LinkPro turns your phone into a studio:

  1. Take 8 guided selfies. On-device face detection checks your distance, angle and light live.
  2. Direct your shoot. Choose your field, a studio or office backdrop and a formal or business casual outfit, for example formal for an insurer and business casual for a broadcaster.
  3. Get your headshots in seconds, pick the most natural one and save it in HD.
  4. Let friends or colleagues vote with a poll link before you send your application.

Your first session is free, with 3 watermarked previews and no account. To keep one in HD without watermark, buy a single headshot as a one-time purchase, with no subscription, or choose LinkPro Unlimited, a weekly subscription you can cancel anytime. LinkPro is a web app: open it in your browser at app.linkproapp.ai, on your phone or a computer, in English, German, French and Italian. Your selfies are not kept on our servers after generation, your headshots are stored on your device, and your images are never used to train AI models (see our privacy policy).

Be honest with yourself about the result: the photo must look natural and like you today. Some German career advisers warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial, so for a conservative insurer, a classic studio photo may still be the safer choice. Frequently asked questions

How much does a CV photo cost in Cologne?

In October 2026, Cologne studios published prices of €59 to €79 for one retouched photo (Studio Schloen, Atelier 5b, die Schnappschützen, Helle Kammer, Bewerbungsfotos Köln). Students and trainees could pay €49 to €50 at some studios. Packages with two or three photos cost €79 to €129, and premium packages €249.

Do I need a photo on my CV to apply for jobs in Cologne?

No. Since the AGG of 2006, a photo is voluntary throughout Germany and employers may not require it. The Federal Employment Agency still describes it as customary in many industries. If the job ad asks for an anonymised application, leave it out.

What should I wear for a CV photo for an insurer in Cologne?

Cologne is Germany's second-largest insurance location, with insurers such as DEVK, Gothaer, HDI and AXA. These are classic employers: a dark blazer or suit, a plain shirt or blouse and a calm, light background are a safe choice.

Is a more creative photo OK for jobs at WDR, RTL or a production company?

Usually, yes. Media employers tend to accept a more personal photo: business casual, a little colour, a warm expression or a soft office or outdoor background. It should still be a professional, sharp head-and-shoulders portrait, not a snapshot.

Can I use an AI headshot for a job in Cologne?

There is no rule against it, but the photo must look natural and show you as you are. Some German career advisers warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial. Choose the most realistic result, and never use it for a passport or ID.
