Hamburg’s job market is shaped by Germany’s largest port, a long-established media industry and one of the world’s major aviation clusters. Most of these employers recruit in German, and many of them still expect a classic, professional application photo. Here is what applies in Hamburg, what local studios charge and how to get a CV photo without booking one.
Do you need a photo on your CV in Hamburg?
Not legally. Since the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) came into force in 2006, a photo on a German application is voluntary and employers may not require one. In practice, the Federal Employment Agency describes it as customary in many industries. Our guide to application photos in Germany covers the rules, sizes and recruiter surveys.
For Hamburg, a simple rule works well:
- German-language application to an established employer (a shipping line, a logistics firm, a publisher, an insurer): include a recent professional photo. It is still the norm, and a good photo helps.
- English-language application to an international team: a CV without a photo is fine. Follow the conventions of the job ad.
- Anonymised application requested: leave the photo out.
What CV photo style works in Hamburg
Three sectors give Hamburg its profile, and each suggests a slightly different look.
- Port, shipping and logistics. A study for the Hamburg Port Authority counted about 68,100 jobs in Hamburg directly linked to the port in 2019, 47,100 of them dependent on it. For shipping lines, terminal operators, freight forwarders and trading companies, a classic, formal look is the safe choice.
- Media, IT and creative industries. According to the City of Hamburg, more than 110,000 people work in over 25,000 companies in media, IT and the creative industries. With publishers, broadcasters, agencies and digital firms, a business-casual look usually fits better.
- Aviation. Hamburg Aviation, the city’s aviation cluster, describes Hamburg as the world’s third-largest civil aviation cluster, with Airbus and Lufthansa Technik among its employers. Engineering roles call for a smart, practical look.
| Sector | Outfit | Background |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping, logistics, trade, banks, insurers | Formal: suit or blazer, shirt or blouse | Plain studio background, light grey or white |
| Media, advertising, digital | Business casual: shirt, blouse or knit, blazer optional | Light studio or soft office backdrop |
| Aviation, engineering | Smart shirt or blouse, jacket optional | Plain, light |
In every case: a recent colour head-and-shoulders portrait, a friendly expression, about 4 × 6 to 4 × 8 cm at the top right of a German CV. For clothing details, see what to wear for a professional headshot, and use the same photo on your LinkedIn profile.
