Strasbourg combines European institutions, a large public and hospital sector, pharmaceutical and industrial sites, and German employers a bridge away in Kehl. Here is when a photo makes sense, which style fits which employer, what Strasbourg studios charge, and how to get a natural headshot without booking a session.

Do you need a photo on your CV in Strasbourg?

Legally, no. No French law requires a photo on a CV. Article L1221-6 of the Labour Code says the information an employer asks of a candidate must have “a direct and necessary link” with the job, and article L1132-1 lists physical appearance among the grounds on which no candidate may be excluded from a recruitment. A photo is your choice, and if you come from a country where CVs carry none, such as the UK or the US, you can keep that habit. If you add one, make it recent, professional and the same as on LinkedIn. The national picture (law, format, placement, data protection) is in our guide to professional headshots in France.

Three Strasbourg cases are worth separating:

  • European and international organisations. The Council of Europe recruits through vacancy notices and an online application form on its careers site, so follow the instructions of each notice rather than French CV habits.
  • French employers (public bodies, the hospital, the university, private firms): the photo is optional. Add one if it is good.
  • German employers across the Rhine. According to INSEE, about 6,700 people living in the Strasbourg employment zone worked across a border in 2021, most of them (4,900) in the Ortenaukreis, the German district facing the city. In Germany a photo has been voluntary since 2006, but it is still customary in many industries: see our guide to application photos in Germany.

What CV photo style works in Strasbourg

According to the Grand Est employment observatory (OREF), using Insee and Urssaf data for the end of 2022, public services dominate around Strasbourg: the Eurométropole de Strasbourg (7,500 to 9,999 employees), the University of Strasbourg (5,000 to 7,499), the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg, the Collectivité européenne d’Alsace, the Grand Est Region and the CNRS. The university hospital describes itself as the largest employer in Alsace, with nearly 12,000 staff. In industry, the list is led by Lilly France in Fegersheim (1,000 to 1,499 employees), Octapharma in Lingolsheim, Punch Powerglide and Legrand.

Job ads appear on national sites such as France Travail, Apec (for managers), Indeed and LinkedIn; on LinkedIn, your photo is the first thing a recruiter sees. Keep it simple: a head-and-shoulders crop, a friendly expression, a photo less than a year old, and the same portrait in every language. Our guide on what to wear for a professional headshot goes into colours and fabrics.

A CV photo without a photographer

If the deadline is tonight, LinkPro turns your phone or computer into a photo studio. Open it in your browser at app.linkproapp.ai, with nothing to install.

  1. Take 8 guided selfies. On-device face detection checks your distance, angle and light live.
  2. Direct your shoot. Choose your field, a studio or office backdrop and a formal or business casual outfit, for example formal for a German employer and business casual for a start-up.
  3. Get your headshots in seconds and pick the most natural one.
  4. Let friends or colleagues vote with a poll link before you send your application.

Your first session is free, with 3 watermarked previews and no account. Then you can buy a single headshot, a one-time purchase that unlocks one headshot of your choice in high definition without watermark, with no subscription. If you want more sessions and restyles, LinkPro Unlimited is a weekly subscription you can cancel anytime. Prices are shown in the app. LinkPro works in English, French, German and Italian, which helps if you apply on both sides of the Rhine.

Your selfies are not kept on our servers after generation, your headshots are stored on your device, and your images are never sold or used to train AI models. You can delete your account and photos (see our privacy policy).

Be honest with yourself about the result: the photo must look natural and like you today. Some career advisers, notably in Germany, warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial, so for a conservative employer a classic studio photo may still be the safer choice. For a side-by-side comparison, read AI headshot vs photographer. A LinkPro photo cannot be used for a passport or ID card, which require biometric photos.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a CV photo cost in Strasbourg?

In October 2026, studios in and around Strasbourg published prices from €75 (Fjarand in Eschau, 30 minutes, one retouched photo) and €80 (Franck Lods in Willgottheim) to €89 (Styl'List Images, student package) and €90 (Jean-Philippe Bloch, three retouched photos). Longer sessions start at €125 to €139. Extra retouched photos cost €25 to €30.

Do I need a photo on my CV to apply for jobs in Strasbourg?

No. No French law requires one, and the Labour Code says the information an employer asks of a candidate must have a direct and necessary link with the job. Physical appearance is one of the grounds of discrimination the Labour Code prohibits. A photo is your choice; if you add one, make it professional.

Do I need a photo to apply to the Council of Europe?

The Council of Europe recruits through vacancy notices and an online application form on its careers site, so what you send depends on the form, not on CV habits. Follow the instructions in each vacancy notice.

I live in Strasbourg and apply to employers in Germany. Should I add a photo?

Follow German habits for German employers. A photo has been voluntary in Germany since the 2006 General Equal Treatment Act, but the Federal Employment Agency still describes it as customary in many industries. Use a recent, professional head-and-shoulders photo unless the ad asks for an application without one.

Can I use an AI headshot for a job in Strasbourg?

There is no rule against it, but the photo must look natural and show you as you are today. Some career advisers, notably in Germany, warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial. Choose the most realistic result, and never use it for a passport or ID card.
