Munich is Germany’s largest insurance location, home to BMW, and, according to the city’s 2026 economic report, the country’s start-up capital. Each of these worlds has its own idea of a good application photo. Here is what studios in Munich charge, which style fits which employer, and how to get a natural photo without booking a session.

Do you need a photo on your CV in Munich?

Legally, no. Since the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) of 2006, a photo on a German application is voluntary, and a job ad may not require one. In practice, the Federal Employment Agency calls it “still customary in many industries”, and many German employers still expect it. The full rules (size, placement, AI photos) are in our guide to application photos in Germany.

If you are an international applicant, two cases are worth separating:

  • German-language applications to insurers, banks, manufacturers or the public sector: include a professional photo unless the ad says otherwise.
  • English-language applications to global tech firms or start-ups: follow the ad. If it asks for an anonymised CV, or the company’s career site says not to add a photo, leave it out.

Whatever you send, recruiters will also look you up on LinkedIn or XING, so use the same photo there.

What CV photo style works in Munich

Munich’s economy is broad. The city’s 2026 economic report counted more than 976,000 employees subject to social insurance in 2025, and 43.1% of them hold a university degree, the highest share among Germany’s large cities. Expect your application to be compared with many highly qualified candidates.

The report describes Munich as Europe’s most important insurance location, with Allianz and Munich Re, and counts 18,657 people working for insurers, reinsurers and pension funds. Munich is also Germany’s second banking centre, with HypoVereinsbank/UniCredit and BayernLB, and 28,249 people in financial services. The report names BMW as the most important private employer in the region, and lists Microsoft, Intel, Google, Cisco, Apple, IBM, Fujitsu and Siemens among the firms with a strategic site in Munich.

Watch for the costs that are not in the headline price:

  • Files sold separately. At Sauter Calumet, the €59 session does not include files: each full-resolution image costs €25.
  • Extras. Fotostudio am Ostbahnhof charges €25 per extra file and a €95 flat fee for a shoot outside the studio.
  • Time. Add the trip across town and the wait for a slot. Delivery is often the same day or the next working day, but check before a deadline.

A CV photo without a photographer

If you need a photo tonight, or you have just arrived in Munich and haven’t found a studio yet, LinkPro turns your phone into one:

  1. Take 8 guided selfies. On-device face detection checks your distance, angle and light live.
  2. Direct your shoot. Choose your field, a studio or office backdrop and a formal or business casual outfit, for example formal for an insurer and business casual for a start-up.
  3. Get your headshots in seconds, pick the most natural one and save it in HD.
  4. Let friends or colleagues vote with a poll link before you send your application.

Your first session is free, with 3 watermarked previews and no account. To keep one in HD without watermark, buy a single headshot as a one-time purchase, with no subscription, or choose LinkPro Unlimited, a weekly subscription you can cancel anytime. LinkPro is a web app: open it in your browser at app.linkproapp.ai, on your phone or a computer, in English, German, French and Italian. Your selfies are not kept on our servers after generation, your headshots are stored on your device, and your images are never used to train AI models (see our privacy policy).

Be honest with yourself about the result: the photo must look natural and like you today. Some German career advisers warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial, so in a conservative sector, a classic studio photo may still be the safer choice. Frequently asked questions

How much does a CV photo cost in Munich?

In October 2026, Munich studios published prices from €39 (PM Studios, one retouched photo) to €99 (Andreas J. Focke, one retouched photo after a 30-minute session). Packages with two or three photos cost €78 to €159, and an executive package €249. Some studios charge for files separately, such as €25 per image at Sauter Calumet.

Do I need a photo on my CV to apply for jobs in Munich?

No. Since the AGG of 2006, a photo is voluntary throughout Germany and employers may not require it. The Federal Employment Agency still describes it as customary in many industries. If an international employer asks for an anonymised application or an English CV without a photo, leave it out.

What should I wear for a CV photo for Allianz, Munich Re or a bank?

Insurance and banking remain classic sectors: a dark suit or blazer, a plain shirt or blouse, and a calm grey or light background. For BMW, Siemens or engineering roles, a blazer without a tie is usually enough. For tech companies and start-ups, business casual works.

Can I use an AI headshot for a job in Munich?

There is no rule against it, but the photo must look natural and show you as you are. Some German career advisers warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial, and conservative sectors tend to be less open than tech. Choose the most realistic result, and never use it for a passport or ID.
