Frankfurt is Germany’s financial centre and one of its most international job markets, with the European Central Bank, the Bundesbank, large banks and an airport that Fraport calls one of Germany’s largest job complexes at a single location. Here is how the German rules on application photos play out in Frankfurt, what local studios charge, and how to get a natural headshot without booking one.

Do you need a photo on your CV in Frankfurt?

Legally, no. Since the General Equal Treatment Act (Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz, AGG) came into force in 2006, the photo on a German application is voluntary, and a job ad may not require it. The Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) still describes it as customary in many industries.

In practice, the language and the employer decide:

  • Applying in German to a German company (bank, insurer, Mittelstand, public sector): a professional photo is still the norm, at the top right of the CV or on a cover page.
  • Applying through an online form: many large employers use their own application portal. Upload the photo only where the form asks for one.
  • Applying to the ECB: its careers site says applications must be submitted in English through the online form, and that attached CVs are not taken into consideration unless the vacancy notice says otherwise. Put your effort into the form rather than into the CV layout.

What CV photo style works in Frankfurt

Frankfurt’s job market is dominated by a few large sectors:

  • Banking and finance. Helaba Research, based on Federal Employment Agency data, counted about 73,900 bank employees in the city of Frankfurt in early 2025, not including staff at institutions such as the ECB.
  • The airport. According to Fraport, Frankfurt Airport City employs about 80,000 people at some 500 companies and organisations on site.
  • Consulting, law, trade fairs, logistics and tech, from the Messe to fintech start-ups.

Whatever the sector, a recent colour photo, head and shoulders, with a natural expression works best. Avoid selfies, passport photos and holiday snaps. For outfits, see what to wear for a professional headshot.

A CV photo without a photographer

If you need a photo for StepStone, LinkedIn or a bank’s application portal this week, LinkPro turns your phone into a studio:

  1. Take 8 guided selfies. On-device face detection checks your distance, angle and light live.
  2. Choose your look: your field, a studio or office backdrop, and a formal or business-casual outfit, from a bank to a fintech.
  3. Get your headshots in seconds, pick the one that looks most natural, and save it in HD.
  4. Ask a friend or colleague to vote with a poll link before you apply.

Your first session is free: 3 watermarked previews, no account needed. To keep one in HD without watermark, buy a single headshot as a one-time purchase, with no subscription, or choose LinkPro Unlimited, a weekly subscription you can cancel anytime. LinkPro is a web app: open it in your browser at app.linkproapp.ai, on your phone or a computer, in English, German, French and Italian.

Keep the balance in mind: some German career advisers warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial, so pick the result that looks most natural and most like you. In conservative sectors, a classic studio photo may still be the safest choice. Your selfies are not kept on LinkPro’s servers after generation, your headshots are stored on your device, and your images are never used to train AI models. You can delete your account and photos from the app; see our privacy policy. A LinkPro photo cannot be used for a passport or ID card.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a photo on my CV for a job in Frankfurt?

No. Since the AGG came into force in 2006, the photo is voluntary and employers may not require it. The Federal Employment Agency notes that it is still customary in many industries, so many candidates still include one unless the job ad asks for an anonymised application.

How much does a Bewerbungsfoto cost in Frankfurt?

Published prices in October 2026 ranged from €30 (12 prints and 1 file at a walk-in studio) and €39 to €99 for 1 to 7 digital images at a budget studio, to €115 to €265 for 20 to 60-minute sessions and €150 to €280 for packages with 1 or 2 retouched photos.

What should I wear for a banking application photo in Frankfurt?

Dress as you would for the interview. For banks, asset managers, law firms and consultancies, that usually means a dark jacket with a shirt or blouse; a tie is optional. In tech, fintech, logistics and events, a neat business-casual look fits better.

Does the ECB want a photo with my application?

The ECB's careers site says applications must be submitted in English through its online application form, and that any attached CV will not be taken into consideration unless the vacancy notice says otherwise. Fill in the form carefully and follow the vacancy notice.

Can I use an AI headshot in a Frankfurt application?

There is no rule against it, but the photo must look like you. Some German career advisers, including a Federal Employment Agency office, warn that AI-edited photos often look artificial. In conservative sectors, a natural, simple result matters most. An AI headshot cannot be used for a German passport or ID card.
