Dortmund has turned from a coal and steel city into a services hub: insurers, an energy grid operator, IT service providers and one of the Ruhr’s busiest logistics locations now set the tone. Each of these employers reads an application photo a little differently. Here is what studios in Dortmund charge, which style fits which employer, and how to get a natural photo without booking a session.

Do you need a photo on your CV in Dortmund?

Legally, no. Since the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) of 2006, a photo on a German application is voluntary, a job ad may not require one, and leaving it out may not be held against you. In practice, the Federal Employment Agency says a photo is “no longer mandatory, but still customary in many industries”. The full rules (size, placement, AI photos) are in our guide to application photos in Germany.

For Dortmund, that means in practice:

  • German-language applications to insurers, utilities, the city administration, hospitals or manufacturers: include a professional photo unless the ad says otherwise.
  • English-language applications to IT firms or international logistics groups: follow the ad. If it asks for an anonymised application, leave the photo out.

Whatever you send, recruiters will also look you up on LinkedIn or XING, so use the same photo there.

What CV photo style works in Dortmund

According to the Dortmund business development agency’s 2025 market report, the city counts about 267,000 employees subject to social insurance, and employment grew by 9.8% over five years. Health and social care (17%) is the largest pillar, followed by manufacturing including construction (14%) and wholesale and retail (11%). The report singles out logistics, IT services and technology as the fastest-growing fields, while unemployment, at 12.0%, remains well above the German average. Expect competition for good positions.

The same report names the city’s largest employers: besides the City of Dortmund itself, the transmission grid operator Amprion (3,100 staff), the pump maker Wilo (about 2,000 of its 9,000 employees work in Dortmund), the IT service providers adesso and Materna (together more than 10,000 employees), and the insurers Continentale and Signal Iduna. On the logistics side, Amazon alone leased about 86,000 m² at Segro Park Dortmund in 2025, which made Dortmund the second-largest logistics market in the Ruhr after Duisburg.

A CV photo without a photographer

If you need a photo tonight, or can’t find a slot before a deadline, LinkPro turns your phone into a studio. It runs in your browser at app.linkproapp.ai, on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install:

  1. Take 8 guided selfies. On-device face detection checks your distance, angle and light live.
  2. Direct your shoot. Choose your field, a studio or office backdrop and a formal or business casual outfit, for example formal for an insurer and business casual for an IT firm.
  3. Get your headshots in seconds and pick the most natural one.
  4. Let friends or colleagues vote with a poll link before you send your application.

Your first session is free, with 3 watermarked previews and no account needed. If one result is right, you can unlock that single headshot in HD without watermark as a one-time purchase, with no subscription. If you want more looks, LinkPro Unlimited is a weekly subscription with unlimited sessions and restyles, which you can cancel anytime. Prices are shown in the web app. LinkPro is available in English, German, French and Italian. Your selfies are not kept on our servers after generation, your headshots are stored on your device, and your images are never sold or used to train AI models (see our privacy policy).

Be honest with yourself about the result: the photo must look natural and like you today. In a conservative sector, a classic studio photo may still be the safer choice. Frequently asked questions

How much does a CV photo cost in Dortmund?

In October 2026, Dortmund studios published prices from €25 (Photofactory, photo file only) and €29.90 (Fotostudio Brinkmann, one retouched file) to €99 (Petra Coddington, a coached session with one file). Two or three retouched photos cost €89.90 to €169. A longer session without files included costs €199 at Petra Coddington, plus €59 for one file.

Do I need a photo on my CV to apply for jobs in Dortmund?

No. Since the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) of 2006, a photo is voluntary throughout Germany, employers may not require one, and leaving it out may not be a reason to reject you. The Federal Employment Agency still describes it as customary in many industries.

What should I wear for a CV photo for Signal Iduna, Continentale or Amprion?

Insurers and energy grid operators are classic employers: a dark blazer or suit, a plain shirt or blouse and a calm grey or light background are a safe choice. For IT service providers such as adesso or Materna, business casual usually works, as long as the photo stays sharp and professional.

Is a cheap CV photo good enough?

It can be, if it is sharp, well lit, recent and retouched only lightly. Check what the price includes: at the cheapest studios you may get one file with little choice of shots, while a coached session gives you more options and guidance on posture and expression.

Can I use an AI headshot for a job in Dortmund?

There is no rule against it, but the photo must look natural and show you as you are. Conservative employers tend to be less open to it than IT firms. Choose the most realistic result, and never use it for a passport or ID.
