Bologna combines Italy’s oldest university with a dense industrial district of packaging machinery and engines. That mix means students, engineers and corporate candidates all compete for jobs here. Here is what employers in Bologna expect from a CV photo, what local studios charge, and how to get a natural headshot without booking a session.

Do you need a photo on your CV in Bologna?

Legally, no. Italian law does not require a photo, and the Legislative Decree 276/2003 forbids employment agencies from screening candidates on personal characteristics such as age, sex or ethnic origin. In practice, a photo is still the norm. Gi Group, one of Italy’s large recruitment agencies, writes that a photo is “not imposed by any law, but it is usually expected”. Unless the ad says otherwise, add one. Format and national rules are in our guide to professional headshots in Italy.

Bologna has a large international community: the University of Bologna counts 97,235 students, 11,302 of them international. If you apply in English to a multinational, follow the ad, as some ask for CVs without a photo. For a public-sector post, follow the call for applications (bando); Italy’s public administration recruits through the inPA portal.

What CV photo style works in Bologna

Bologna has one of Italy’s strongest job markets. According to ISTAT, the metropolitan area had an unemployment rate of 3.1% in 2025, half the national 6.1%, and an employment rate of 74.2% among 15 to 64-year-olds (Italy: 62.5%). Employers can be choosy, so a professional photo helps.

The city is the heart of the “packaging valley”. Coesia’s G.D and ACMA, makers of automatic packaging machines, are based in Bologna, and IMA has its head office in Ozzano dell’Emilia, just outside the city. Ducati builds motorcycles in Bologna and Lamborghini cars in nearby Sant’Agata Bolognese. The university itself employs 6,881 people, and the trade fair BolognaFiere hosts international events such as Cersaie and Cosmoprof.

If your deadline is tomorrow, or a studio session doesn’t fit a student budget, LinkPro turns your phone into a studio. Open it in your browser at app.linkproapp.ai, on a phone or a computer; there is nothing to install.

  1. Take 8 guided selfies. Face detection on your device checks your distance, angle and light live.
  2. Direct your shoot. Choose your field, a studio or office backdrop and a formal or business casual outfit, for example formal for a bank and business casual for a start-up.
  3. Get your headshots in seconds and pick the most natural one.
  4. Let friends or colleagues vote with a poll link before you apply.

Your first session is free, with 3 watermarked previews and no account. You can then buy a single headshot, a one-time purchase that unlocks one headshot of your choice in HD without a watermark, or subscribe to LinkPro Unlimited, a weekly subscription you can cancel anytime. Prices are shown in the app. LinkPro works in English, Italian, French and German.

Your selfies are not kept on our servers after generation, your headshots are stored on your device, and your images are never sold or used to train AI models. You can delete your account and photos at any time (see our privacy policy).

Be honest about the result: it must look natural and like you today. If it doesn’t, book a studio; compare both in AI headshot vs photographer. A LinkPro photo cannot be used for a passport or ID card, which require biometric photos. Applying in Florence too? See our CV photo guide for Florence.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a CV photo cost in Bologna?

Published prices in October 2026: €74 + VAT at Foto Image (30 minutes, 2 or 3 photos), €120 to €270 for Roberto Salvatori's business portrait packages, €300 for Silvia Bordin's Personal Brand Express (1 to 2 hours) and €375 for Luca Fiorio's headshot session (up to 45 minutes, 3 edited images).

Do I need a photo on my CV to apply for jobs in Bologna?

No law requires one. Gi Group says a photo is not mandatory unless the employer asks for it, but that it is usually expected in Italy. Unless the ad says otherwise, add a recent, professional headshot.

What should I wear for a CV photo for a packaging or engineering company in Bologna?

For machinery makers such as G.D, ACMA or IMA, a jacket without a tie or a smart shirt is usually right. For banks and insurers, a dark jacket and a plain shirt or blouse. For university, research and start-up roles, business casual works. Keep a neutral background in every case.

I'm an international student in Bologna: should my CV have a photo?

For Italian employers, yes, unless the ad says otherwise. For international companies that ask for English CVs, follow the ad: some ask for no photo. Use the same headshot on LinkedIn, which recruiters check either way.

Can I use an AI headshot for a job application in Bologna?

No rule forbids it, but the photo must look natural and like you today. Randstad advises against filters and special effects that look unprofessional, so pick the most realistic result. It cannot be used for a passport or ID card, which need biometric photos.
