# CV Photos in Italy: Rules, Format, Prices and AI Headshots

Updated October 15, 2026 · 7 min read

Short answer

No Italian law requires a photo on a CV, and employers may not judge candidates on traits irrelevant to the job. In practice, most Italian CVs include one, and Europass recommends a professional photo. Use a recent colour head-and-shoulders portrait at the top of your CV. Published studio prices in October 2026 ran from €40 to about €250. An AI headshot can work if it looks natural and like you.

In Italy, a photo on your CV is almost a default. It is not a legal requirement, and the law protects you from being judged on anything irrelevant to the job, but most candidates include one. Here are the rules, the usual format, what a photographer costs from Milan to Catania, where recruiters will look you up, and what Italian data protection law says about your photos.

## Is a CV photo expected in Italy?

Legally, no. No Italian law requires a photo, and two rules limit what can be held against you:

- **The Workers’ Statute** (_Statuto dei lavoratori_, Law 300/1970, article 8) forbids employers, when hiring, from investigating a candidate’s political, religious or union opinions, or “facts not relevant to the assessment of the worker’s professional aptitude”.
- **Legislative Decree 276/2003** (article 10) forbids employment agencies and other authorised intermediaries from any screening or processing of data based on beliefs, sex, sexual orientation, marital or family status, pregnancy, age, disability, race, ethnic origin or health, even with the candidate’s consent, unless the trait is an essential requirement of the job.

In practice, the photo is the norm. CV builder Jobseeker writes that in Italy it is seen as a normal part of the profile and “almost always included”. The EU’s Europass CV builder advises you to “add a professional photo of yourself” before you send your CV. Recruitment agency Gi Group puts it simply: the photo is not mandatory unless the job ad asks for it, but a good one can catch a recruiter’s attention and helps them recognise you at the interview.

In short: include a professional photo unless the ad, or an international employer, asks you not to.

## Format, placement and style

Italian career advice agrees on the basics:

| Criterion | Recommendation |
| --- | --- |
| Placement | At the top, next to your personal details; usually top right |
| Framing | Close, head and shoulders, like an ID photo but friendlier |
| File | At least 300 dpi, JPEG or PNG |
| Background | Plain and neutral, such as a white wall, or a softly blurred office |
| Clothing | What you would wear to the interview; no T-shirts |
| Retouching | Good light, no filters |
| Avoid | Holiday or beach photos, odd poses, shots from above or below, arm-length selfies |

A classic ID photo (_fototessera_) is the cheapest option, but it looks stiff on a CV. For clothing, see [what to wear for a professional headshot](/guides/what-to-wear-for-a-professional-headshot/).

**The privacy line at the bottom.** You will often see Italian CVs end with a sentence authorising the processing of personal data. For a CV you send on your own initiative, article 111-bis of the Privacy Code (_Codice della privacy_) says consent to process the data it contains is not required, and the employer gives you the GDPR privacy notice at the first useful contact. The line does no harm, but it is not needed; follow the ad if it asks for a specific statement.

## How much does a CV photo cost in Italy?

The marketplace ProntoPro puts professional photo services at about €120 to €250, with an average band of €100 to €400 for all portrait jobs. Prices published by studios in October 2026:

| City | Examples of published prices |
| --- | --- |
| [Rome](/guides/cv-photo-rome/) | €57 (15 minutes, no retouching); €90 to €97 for 1 or 2 retouched portraits; €150 for 6; executive sessions from €250 |
| [Milan](/guides/cv-photo-milan/) | €70 (30-minute LinkedIn portrait); €150 to €250 for 3 to 10 retouched photos; corporate packages from €350 |
| [Turin](/guides/cv-photo-turin/) | €60 (CV photo session); €100 to €150 for 2 or 3 retouched portraits; €300 for a 2-hour headshot session |
| [Genoa](/guides/cv-photo-genoa/) | €40 (short shoot, 4 edited images); €80 for a studio portrait with 10 images |
| [Florence](/guides/cv-photo-florence/) | Portrait photographers from €99 on online platforms; portfolio session from €150 |
| [Bologna](/guides/cv-photo-bologna/) | From €74 + VAT (30-minute session, 2 or 3 photos); €120 to €270 for longer business sessions; €300 to €375 for premium packages |
| [Bari](/guides/cv-photo-bari/) | Most studios quote on request; portrait photographers from €99 on online platforms |
| [Catania](/guides/cv-photo-catania/) | Portrait sessions from €75 to €99; ID-style prints about €10 |

In short, budget €40 to €100 for a short session with one or two retouched portraits, €150 to €250 for a package with several photos, and €350 or more for a corporate session. Two things to check before you book: whether the price includes VAT, which is 22% in Italy and which some photographers quote separately, and how many retouched files you get. In Bari and Catania, most studios quote on request. Compare all options in [AI headshot vs photographer](/guides/ai-headshot-vs-photographer/).

## LinkedIn and job portals in Italy

LinkedIn is where recruiters will look you up. DataReportal counted 25.0 million LinkedIn members in Italy in late 2025, equivalent to 42.3% of the population, and LinkedIn’s ad reach grew by 3.0 million (13.6%) in a year. These are registered members, not active users, but the trend is clear. Use the same photo on LinkedIn as on your CV, so recruiters recognise you; see our [LinkedIn profile picture tips](/guides/linkedin-profile-picture-tips/).

The job board landscape has changed. InfoJobs, long one of Italy’s main job sites, closed its Italian business at the end of 2025, so older advice to post your CV there is out of date. Public-sector jobs go through calls (_bandi_) published on inPA, the government’s recruitment portal, where you register by filling in your CV on the platform; follow each call’s instructions.

## Your photos, the GDPR and the Garante

Under the GDPR, a photo of you is personal data. It becomes special-category biometric data only when it is processed to uniquely identify you, for example by facial recognition. In Italy, the data protection authority is the _Garante per la protezione dei dati personali_, and it takes faces seriously: in February 2022 it fined Clearview AI €20 million for scraping facial images from the web and turning them into biometric templates, and ordered it to delete the data of people in Italy. Its decision states that photos being publicly available online does not make collecting them lawful.

Any app you upload your face to should tell you how long it keeps your photos, where they go and whether they are used for training. With LinkPro, your selfies are not kept on our servers after generation, your headshots are stored on your device, and your images are never sold or used to train AI models. You can delete your account and your photos. See our [privacy policy](/privacy/).

## A professional CV photo without a photographer

LinkPro helps you get a realistic CV photo without booking a studio:

1. **Take 8 guided selfies.** On-device face detection checks your distance, angle and light live.
2. **Direct your shoot.** Choose your field, a studio or office backdrop and a formal or business casual outfit.
3. **Get your headshots in seconds** and pick the one that looks most like you.
4. **Ask friends or colleagues to vote** with a poll link before you send your application.

LinkPro is a web app: open it in your browser at [app.linkproapp.ai](https://app.linkproapp.ai), on your phone or your computer, in Italian, English, French or German. Nothing to install. Your first session is a free preview, with 3 watermarked previews and no account. Then you can buy a single headshot, a one-time purchase that unlocks one HD headshot of your choice without a watermark and with no subscription, or choose LinkPro Unlimited, a weekly subscription you can cancel anytime.

Our advice for any AI headshot:

- **It must be you.** Keep your real features, hair, glasses and age. Avoid over-smoothed skin and anything that makes you look younger.
- **Natural beats perfect.** Choose a simple backdrop and realistic light. Some career advisers warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial, as our [guide to Germany](/guides/professional-headshots-germany/) explains.
- **Adapt to the sector.** In banking, law or the public sector, a classic studio portrait may still feel safer.
- **Not for documents.** A LinkPro photo cannot be used for a passport or an identity card, which require biometric photos.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a photo mandatory on a CV in Italy?

No. No law requires one, and Italian employment law bars employers and agencies from screening candidates on facts that are irrelevant to their professional aptitude. Recruitment agency Gi Group notes that a photo is not mandatory unless the job ad asks for it. According to CV builder Jobseeker, it is almost always included.

### Where should the photo go on an Italian CV?

At the top, next to your personal details; CV builders usually place it at the top right. Use a close, head-and-shoulders crop, a plain or softly blurred background and a high-resolution file of at least 300 dpi in JPEG or PNG.

### How much does a CV photo cost in Italy?

The marketplace ProntoPro puts professional photo services at about €120 to €250. Published studio prices in October 2026 started at €40 in Genoa, €57 in Rome, €60 in Turin and €70 in Milan for a short session, with packages of several retouched photos at €150 to €250 and corporate packages from €350. Some photographers quote prices without the 22% VAT.

### Do I need to add a privacy consent line to my Italian CV?

Not for a CV you send spontaneously. Article 111-bis of the Italian Privacy Code says consent to process the personal data in such a CV is not required, and the employer gives you the privacy notice at the first useful contact. Follow the job ad if it asks for a specific statement.

### Can I use an AI headshot on my Italian CV?

No rule forbids it, but the photo must show you as you are today. Choose a natural, recent likeness without over-smoothed skin, and never use it for a passport or identity card, which require biometric photos.
