Leipzig has grown to more than 633,000 residents, and its economy rests on very different pillars: hospitals and life sciences, the BMW and Porsche plants, logistics, and a large media and creative scene. Each of them reads an application photo a little differently. Here is what Leipzig studios charge, which style fits which employer, and how to get a natural photo without booking a session.

## Do you need a photo on your CV in Leipzig?

Legally, no. Since the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) of 2006, a photo on a German application is voluntary. The Federal Employment Agency says the photo is “no longer compulsory, but still customary in many industries”, because most recruiters still want to see who they are dealing with. It also lists two absolute don’ts: a phone selfie and a plain passport photo. If you are applying from abroad or as an international student:

-   **German-language applications** to hospitals, manufacturers, logistics firms or the public sector: include a professional photo unless the ad says otherwise.
-   **English-language applications** to research institutes, start-ups or international teams: follow the ad. If it asks for an anonymised CV, leave the photo out.

Recruiters will also look you up on LinkedIn or XING, so use the same photo there.

## What CV photo style works in Leipzig

According to the Leipzig employment agency, 297,289 people subject to social insurance worked in the city in June 2025, up from 274,019 in 2020, and more than 36% of them commute in from outside. The market has cooled since: the city’s 2025 economic report puts unemployment at 8.5% at the end of 2025, and the agency reported 9.2% in September 2026, with 5,131 open positions. The sectors with the most vacancies were business services, professional and technical services, health and social work, construction, manufacturing and trade.

The city’s figures show where people work. In September 2025, health and social work was the largest sector with 47,028 employees, followed by manufacturing (27,745), IT and communications (21,913) and transport and storage (21,321). Counted by cluster for 2024, health care and biotechnology employed 54,203 people, logistics 40,020, media and creative industries 39,452 and automotive 21,743. The 2025 report also highlights growth on the BioCity Campus, a production record at BMW, a new SUV model planned by Porsche, and Siemens moving into a new office on Johannisplatz.

Be honest with yourself about the result: given the agency’s warning about selfies, the photo you send must look like a natural studio portrait and like you today.
