Essen is the Ruhr’s headquarters city: energy, chemicals, steel, construction and retail groups run their businesses from here, while health care has quietly become its largest employment sector. A photo that suits a corporate head office can look stiff for a care provider, and the reverse. Here is what studios in Essen charge, which style fits which employer, and how to get a natural photo without booking a session.

## Do you need a photo on your CV in Essen?

Legally, no. Since the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) of 2006, a photo on a German application is voluntary, a job ad may not require one, and leaving it out may not be held against you. In practice, the Federal Employment Agency says a photo is “no longer mandatory, but still customary in many industries”. For Essen, that means in practice:

-   **German-language applications** to corporate head offices, utilities, hospitals or the city administration: include a professional photo unless the ad says otherwise.
-   **English-language applications** to international teams within these groups: follow the ad. If it asks for an anonymised application, leave the photo out.

Whatever you send, recruiters will also look you up on LinkedIn or XING, so use the same photo there.

## What CV photo style works in Essen

The DZ HYP regional study 2025/2026 describes Essen’s shift from industrial production to administration “with an impressive density of corporate headquarters”. It lists the head offices of Brenntag, E.ON, RWE, Evonik, Hochtief and thyssenkrupp, plus Aldi Nord, Deichmann, Funke Mediengruppe, Medion and STEAG among other major firms. The same study notes that unemployment stays in double digits despite all those head offices.

The city’s statistics office gives the detail. On 30 June 2025, 271,635 people subject to social insurance worked in Essen. Health and social care was by far the largest single sector, with 50,245 employees (18.5%), followed by trade (33,047), professional, scientific and technical services (30,563) and other business services (30,291). Energy supply alone accounted for 9,156 jobs, a reminder of Essen’s role as a base for energy groups. The unemployment rate stood at 11.4% in June 2025.

In short, one CV photo file costs €29 to €95 in Essen, with simple studio photos around €30 to €45 and coached sessions €89 to €95.
