# Best Headshot Services for Job Seekers: 5 Options Compared

Updated October 15, 2026 · 8 min read

Short answer

There is no single best headshot service for job seekers: it depends on your budget, your deadline and where you apply. A local photographer (about CHF 50 to 120 or €50 to 150 for a CV photo) gives you human direction. Career-fair booths can be free if an event fits your timing. AI headshot services cost less and deliver in seconds to hours, which suits fast or repeated updates, as long as the result looks natural.

A job search needs a photo for your LinkedIn profile, often for your CV, and sometimes for an application portal. You can get one from a photographer, a walk-in photo chain, a free booth at a career fair, your own phone or an AI headshot service. Each has a real trade-off in cost, time and result. Here is an honest comparison, ranked by fit rather than by a made-up “number one”.

## The five options at a glance

| Option | Typical cost | Time to a usable photo | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Local photographer or studio | CHF 50 to 120 or €50 to 150 for a CV photo; more for packages | Booking, a 15 to 60 minute session, then days for retouched files | Senior roles, traditional sectors, personal branding |
| Photo chain, walk-in studio | €30 to €90 at Studioline in Germany, by number of files | Same day for the shoot | A cheap studio photo without an appointment |
| Career fair or university booth | Free or low cost | Wait for the event, then minutes to 4 weeks | Students and recent graduates |
| DIY with a phone | Free | An afternoon of trial and error | A placeholder, very tight budgets |
| AI headshot service | Free previews; one-time purchases, packs or subscriptions | Seconds to 2 hours | Fast results, several styles, regular updates |

## 1\. A local photographer or photo studio

A photographer directs your pose and expression, lights you properly and delivers retouched files. It is still the reference for a CV photo in Switzerland and Germany.

Published prices in October 2026: a basic CV photo costs about CHF 50 to 120 in Switzerland, with packages of several retouched photos at CHF 150 to 260. In Germany, StepStone puts the average application photo at €50 to 150. Add the time to find a studio, book, travel and wait for the files.

**Trade-offs:** the best human direction and a real photo, but the most expensive option, and every new look means a new session. Our guide [AI headshot vs photographer](/guides/ai-headshot-vs-photographer/) compares the two in detail.

## 2\. Photo chains and walk-in studios

Between the independent photographer and the photo booth sit studio chains. In Germany, Studioline has studios across the country. At the time of checking, its standard application shoot needed no appointment and produced up to 15 photos, from which you pick a package: €39.99 for 1 file and a print, €30 for 2 files, €50 for 4, or €90 for all 15. A premium shoot with 30 minutes of photos and business make-up started at €49.99.

**Trade-offs:** cheaper and faster to book than most independents, but a shorter, more standardised session. Read recent local reviews before you go, as quality varies from one studio to another.

Note that passport photo booths and drugstore photo services are made for ID photos. Career advisers in Switzerland and Germany discourage them for applications, because they look stiff.

## 3\. Free headshots at career fairs and university career services

If you are a student or recent graduate, check your university first. Many career services offer free or subsidised headshots:

- **Absolvierenden-Messe Basel** (graduate fair, 4 November 2026, Congress Center Basel) lists free CV checks and application photos, with free entry.
- **Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)** runs campus photo shoots for students: 3 edited application photos for €20, sent by email about two weeks later.
- **University of Kansas** has a self-guided photo booth, free and first come, first served, that emails your photos within minutes.
- **Boise State University** offers one free headshot per student at its career fair, delivered 3 to 4 weeks after the event.

**Trade-offs:** free or nearly free, but you depend on the event calendar, queues and eligibility (usually students, sometimes alumni). You get little choice of style and may wait weeks for the file.

## 4\. DIY with your phone

A modern phone camera, a window and a plain wall can produce a decent photo. Use the rear camera or a timer, stand facing soft daylight, frame head and shoulders, and take many shots. Our step-by-step guide explains [how to take a professional headshot](/guides/how-to-take-a-professional-headshot/) yourself, and [what to wear](/guides/what-to-wear-for-a-professional-headshot/).

**Trade-offs:** free and immediate, but hard to get right alone. Swiss career services specifically discourage raw selfies and holiday snaps on a CV. A DIY photo works well as a LinkedIn placeholder, less well on a Swiss or German CV.

## 5\. AI headshot services

AI services turn your own photos into studio-style portraits. They differ in how you pay, how many photos they need, how long you wait and where they run. Facts checked in October 2026 from each provider’s public pages (US dollar prices as listed):

| Service | Price model | Photos you provide | Wait | Platform |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| LinkPro | Free preview (3 watermarked headshots, no account); single headshot (one-time); Unlimited, weekly | 8 guided selfies, checked live for angle, distance and light | Seconds | Web app (browser, phone or computer) |
| HeadshotPro | One-time packs: $29 (30 headshots) to $59 (70) | 1 to 3 recent photos | 15 minutes to about 2 hours | Website |
| Aragon AI | One-time packs: $35 (40) to $75 (100), or monthly plans | About 6 photos | 15 to 45 minutes | Website, iOS, Android |
| BetterPic | One-time plans: $35 (20) to $79 (120), 4K; human retouching on the top plan | About 8 photos | 1 to 2 hours | Website |
| Remini | Weekly subscription ($4.99 to $9.99); free tier with ads | 8 to 12 photos from your gallery | A few minutes | iOS, Android, web |
| GIO | Weekly ($5.99 to $11.99) or yearly ($29.99 or $39.99) subscription | One selfie | Seconds | iOS, Android |
| ChatGPT, Gemini | Free tiers; paid plans (ChatGPT Plus $19.99 a month) | One or more photos and a text prompt | Seconds to minutes | Apps and web |

How they fit a job search:

- **One-time packs (HeadshotPro, Aragon AI, BetterPic)** suit a single, planned batch. You pay once, wait a little and get dozens of images. BetterPic is the one to pick if you want 4K files or a human retoucher.
- **LinkPro** suits a search where you need a photo now and may adjust it later: a more formal look for a bank, a lighter one for a startup, a new backdrop for LinkedIn. If you only need one photo, a single headshot is a one-time purchase with no subscription; LinkPro Unlimited is weekly and renews until you cancel it. See the side-by-side pages: [LinkPro vs HeadshotPro](/compare/linkpro-vs-headshotpro/), [Aragon AI](/compare/linkpro-vs-aragon-ai/) and [all comparisons](/compare/).
- **General apps (Remini, GIO)** are built for many photo styles, not specifically for professional portraits. They make sense if you already use them.
- **Chatbots (ChatGPT, Gemini)** cost nothing extra if you already have them, but you write and rewrite the prompt yourself, and on consumer plans your photos may be used for training unless you change the settings.

**Trade-offs:** fast, cheap and flexible, but an AI photo must look like you. A May 2026 guide from a Federal Employment Agency office in Germany warns that AI-edited photos “often look artificial”, while a 2024 Ringover survey of 1,087 recruiters found 76.5% preferred an AI headshot in a blind test. The lesson is to choose natural results, not to avoid AI. AI headshots also cannot be used for passports or ID cards.

## Which option fits which job seeker

### Student or graduate on a budget

Start with your university’s career service or the next graduate fair, as these photos are often free. If the timing doesn’t work, a free AI preview or a careful DIY photo will cover LinkedIn until then. If you need just one finished photo, LinkPro’s single headshot is a one-time purchase; a paid one-time AI pack is reasonable if you need many images. Otherwise the free routes are enough.

### Career changer

Your photo should look like the field you are moving into, not the one you are leaving. That is where AI flexibility helps: try a corporate and a business-casual look and see which fits the new sector. LinkPro’s industry choices (corporate, creative, tech, academia, luxury, industrial) and friend-vote poll are built for this. A photographer works too, but each new style is a new session.

### Executive or senior candidate

A senior profile is seen by boards, clients and the press, and often needs several formats. A professional photographer or a personal-branding shoot remains the strongest choice here. An AI service can fill the gap if you need an updated LinkedIn photo before the shoot.

### Applying in Switzerland or Germany

CV photos matter more here than in most countries. In Switzerland, a photo is customary and often expected; in Germany, it has been voluntary since the AGG of 2006, but is still common. Expect a classic, head-and-shoulders portrait on a neutral background. Read the details on size, placement and local prices in our guides to [professional headshots in Switzerland](/guides/professional-headshots-switzerland/) and [professional headshots in Germany](/guides/professional-headshots-germany/). LinkPro is available in English, French, German and Italian, which helps if you apply in several language regions.

## Whatever you choose

- **Same photo everywhere.** Use one headshot on your CV and LinkedIn so recruiters recognise you. See our [LinkedIn profile picture tips](/guides/linkedin-profile-picture-tips/).
- **Check where your photos go.** Before uploading your face anywhere, read how long photos are kept and whether they train AI models. LinkPro does not keep your selfies on its servers after generation and never uses them for training; details in our [privacy policy](/privacy/).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best headshot service for job seekers?

The one that fits your situation. Students can often get a free or cheap photo through their university's career service. Senior candidates and very traditional sectors justify a photographer. If you need a photo quickly, or want to update it as your search evolves, an AI headshot service is the fastest and cheapest route, provided the result looks like you.

### What is the best AI headshot service for a job search?

It depends on how you want to pay and work. LinkPro guides 8 selfies in your browser, on a phone or a computer, and delivers in seconds, with a free preview, a single headshot as a one-time purchase or a weekly Unlimited subscription. HeadshotPro, Aragon AI and BetterPic sell one-time packs on the web, with waits from 15 minutes to 2 hours. General apps like ChatGPT or Gemini work if you are happy writing prompts.

### Can I get a professional headshot for free?

Often, yes, if you are a student or graduate. Many universities run free headshot booths at career fairs or in their career centres; in Switzerland, the Absolvierenden-Messe in Basel lists free application photos for 4 November 2026. Some AI services also offer a free preview, such as LinkPro's 3 watermarked headshots without an account.

### Do I need a headshot for job applications?

It depends on the country. In Switzerland a CV photo is not required by law but is customary, and many recruiters expect one. In Germany it has been voluntary since the AGG of 2006, yet still common in many industries. Almost everywhere, a professional photo helps on LinkedIn, where LinkedIn says members with a photo get up to 2 times more profile views.

### Is it OK to use an AI headshot for job applications?

Yes, if it is a recent, realistic likeness of you. Some German career advisers warn that AI-edited photos can look artificial, and in a 2024 Ringover survey 88% of recruiters wanted candidates to disclose AI photos. Pick the most natural result, keep your real features and age, and say it was made with AI if asked.
