# AI Headshots for LinkedIn: What's Allowed and How to Choose

Updated October 15, 2026 · 8 min read

Short answer

Yes, if it looks like you. LinkedIn's rules don't mention AI headshots, but they say your profile photo must reflect your likeness and that fake profiles are not allowed. An AI portrait made from your own photos is fine if your face, hair and age match you on a video call. Upload a square JPG or PNG of at least 400 × 400 pixels, under 8 MB, and choose the most recognisable result, not the most flattering.

AI headshots have become one of the most common ways to refresh a LinkedIn profile picture. The two real questions are whether LinkedIn accepts them and how to get one that people recognise as you. This guide covers LinkedIn’s own rules, how the photo is displayed, and how to choose among generated results. For general advice on framing, smiling and backgrounds, see our [LinkedIn profile picture tips](/guides/linkedin-profile-picture-tips/).

## Does LinkedIn allow AI headshots?

LinkedIn’s rules say nothing about AI as such. They are about likeness and identity.

- **Profile photo guidelines.** LinkedIn’s help page says “your profile photo must reflect your likeness”. It also says you “can use an illustration, caricature, or other artistic rendering of yourself”. Photos can be removed if they consist only of logos, emojis, landscapes, animals, words, flags, childhood photos or “others’ likenesses, including stock imagery, photos of celebrities, and depictions of fictional characters”.
- **Professional Community Policies.** “We don’t allow fake profiles or entities.” Members must “use your true identity” and must not use “an image of someone else, or any other image that is not your likeness, for your profile photo”.

So an AI headshot generated from your own photos is within the rules if it still looks like you. A face that is not yours is not: a portrait so idealised that it shows a younger or different person, or a generated face used on a fake profile.

LinkedIn does fight synthetic faces, but on fake accounts. In June 2023 its trust and safety engineers, working with UC Berkeley professor Hany Farid, described a detector that caught 99.6% of faces generated by StyleGAN models, while flagging 1% of real LinkedIn photos by mistake. The same post says the method “does not generalize to Stable Diffusion faces”. It also notes that “most members are generally unable to visually distinguish real from synthetically-generated faces”.

You may also have seen a “Content Credentials” icon on LinkedIn. It appears on posted images and videos that carry signed C2PA metadata, which can state whether AI was used. LinkedIn’s help page on this feature describes feed content and ads; it does not mention profile photos.

## How LinkedIn displays your photo

| Item | What LinkedIn says or does |
| --- | --- |
| File type | JPG or PNG; GIFs are not supported |
| Size | From 400 × 400 to 7680 × 4320 pixels |
| File size | Up to 8 MB |
| Shape | Shown in a circle on your profile, in search results, comments and messages |
| Default visibility | Anyone; you can also choose 1st-degree connections only, your network or all LinkedIn members |
| #OpenToWork | If you share that you are open to work with all members, LinkedIn adds a frame to your photo |

What this means for an AI headshot:

- **Ask for a square, head-and-shoulders crop.** LinkedIn recommends a photo “that won’t require much cropping”. A half-body or landscape result loses your face once it is cut to a circle.
- **Judge it small.** Most people see your photo as a thumbnail next to a comment or in a list of candidates. A detail that only shows in full size, such as a perfect suit texture, matters less than a clear face and good contrast with the backdrop.
- **Leave room for a frame.** With the #OpenToWork frame, the edge of the circle is partly covered. Keep your face centred.
- **Keep it visible.** A great headshot set to “1st-degree connections only” won’t be seen by a recruiter who isn’t connected with you yet.

## What makes an AI headshot work on LinkedIn

On LinkedIn, the photo is the first step of a chain: profile, message, video call, maybe an office visit. An AI headshot works if nobody feels a jump between those steps. Think of it as the video-call test: when a recruiter opens a video call with you, do you look like the person in the circle?

| Keep exactly as you are | Fine to change, as a photographer would |
| --- | --- |
| Face shape, nose, eyes, teeth | Backdrop: studio, office, blurred outdoors |
| Skin texture, freckles, moles, wrinkles | Clothing and how well it fits |
| Hairline, hair length and colour, beard | Lighting and colour balance |
| Glasses, if you wear them every day | Framing and camera angle |
| Age and build | Posture and a relaxed expression |

Two practical points:

- **Consistency over perfection.** Use the same headshot on LinkedIn, your company page and your email signature, and update it when your hair, glasses or beard change.
- **Restraint pays.** In Ringover’s 2024 survey of 1,087 recruiters, the top reasons a headshot put recruiters off were being “too stylized or posed” (40.9%) and “the use of filters or obvious editing” (32.7%). A German Federal Employment Agency office warns that AI-edited photos “often look artificial”. Our [AI headshot vs photographer guide](/guides/ai-headshot-vs-photographer/) covers that debate.

## How to pick among generated options

AI tools give you many results at once, and the most striking one is rarely the right one. A simple method:

1. **Sort by likeness first.** Put a recent, unedited photo of yourself or a screenshot from a video call next to the results. Remove any result where your face, hair or age has drifted, however good it looks.
2. **Look for AI tells.** Zoom in on ears, teeth, glasses frames, earrings, collars and the edge of your hair. Asymmetric glasses, merged teeth or a collar that dissolves into the backdrop give a headshot away.
3. **Do the circle test.** Crop your shortlist into a small circle, or upload it privately and preview it. Keep the ones where your face is still clear at thumbnail size.
4. **Match your field.** A dark suit against an executive backdrop says something different from a knit sweater in daylight. Pick what you would actually wear to a meeting; see [what to wear for a professional headshot](/guides/what-to-wear-for-a-professional-headshot/).
5. **Let others choose.** A 2017 study found that strangers chose better profile photos of people than those people chose for themselves. Ask two or three colleagues which one looks most like you, not which one they like best.

## What recruiters think of AI headshots

The most-cited data comes from Ringover, a software company, which surveyed 1,087 recruiters in June 2024. Recruiters were shown real and AI headshots of five people without being told which was which.

- 76.5% preferred an AI headshot over the real one.
- They identified AI headshots correctly only 39.5% of the time, although 80% believed they had guessed accurately.
- 66% said they would be put off by a candidate if they recognised the headshot as AI-generated, and 88% think candidates should make AI use clear.
- 84% said they would use, or consider using, an AI headshot themselves.

The takeaway isn’t to hide that your photo is AI. A natural result that looks like you leaves nothing to discover. If someone asks, “an AI portrait made from my own selfies” is a perfectly good answer.

## How to get an AI headshot for LinkedIn

| Option | What you provide | Waiting time | Pricing model (checked October 2026) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| LinkPro (web app, phone or computer) | 8 guided selfies taken in the app | Seconds | Free preview; single headshot (one-time); Unlimited, weekly |
| [HeadshotPro](/compare/linkpro-vs-headshotpro/) | 1 to 3 uploaded photos | 15 minutes to 2 hours | One-time packs from $29 for 30 headshots |
| [Aragon AI](/compare/linkpro-vs-aragon-ai/) | About 6 uploaded photos | 15 to 45 minutes | One-time packs from $35 for 40 headshots |
| [BetterPic](/compare/linkpro-vs-betterpic/) | About 8 uploaded photos | 1 to 2 hours | One-time plans from $35 for 20 headshots |
| [ChatGPT](/compare/linkpro-vs-chatgpt/) or [Gemini](/compare/linkpro-vs-gemini/) | A photo and a written prompt | Seconds to minutes | Free tiers with limits, paid plans |

Web packs suit you if you want one large batch for a one-time price, or headshots for a whole team. Chatbots are a free way to experiment if you enjoy prompting, but check their training settings before uploading your face. All options are compared side by side on our [comparison page](/compare/).

**LinkPro** is built around the LinkedIn use case. You take 8 guided selfies in your browser at [app.linkproapp.ai](https://app.linkproapp.ai), on your phone or a computer, with live checks on distance, angle and light. You choose your industry, a studio or office backdrop and a formal or business-casual outfit, and the headshots arrive in seconds. Pick the most natural one, save it in HD, or share a poll link so friends vote. Your selfies are not kept on LinkPro’s servers after generation and are never used to train AI models; see our [privacy policy](/privacy/).

Its limits, honestly: you can’t upload existing photos, as LinkPro uses its guided session instead. The free first session gives 3 watermarked previews without an account, enough to judge the likeness but not to post. For one HD headshot without watermark, buy a single headshot as a one-time purchase, with no subscription; LinkPro Unlimited, a weekly subscription you can cancel anytime, adds unlimited sessions and restyles. It is designed for individuals, not teams, and like any AI headshot it cannot be used for a passport or ID photo.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does LinkedIn allow AI-generated profile pictures?

LinkedIn's help pages don't mention AI. They say your profile photo must reflect your likeness, and they even allow an illustration or other artistic rendering of yourself. What is not allowed is an image that isn't you, such as someone else's face, stock imagery or a face of a person who doesn't exist on a fake profile.

### Can LinkedIn detect AI headshots?

LinkedIn has published research on detecting fully synthetic faces, the kind used by fake accounts. In 2023 it reported catching 99.6% of faces from one family of generators, while noting the method does not generalise to other types. Its published rules target images that are not your likeness, not AI portraits of real members.

### Do I have to say that my LinkedIn photo is AI-generated?

LinkedIn's profile photo rules don't require a label. Recruiters do care, though. In a 2024 Ringover survey, 88% of recruiters said candidates should make it clear when a headshot is AI-generated. Choose a natural result and answer openly if someone asks.

### Will recruiters notice that my LinkedIn photo is AI?

Often not. In Ringover's 2024 blind test, recruiters spotted AI headshots only 39.5% of the time, although 80% thought they had guessed right. They will notice if you look different on a video call, so likeness matters more than polish.

### What is the best AI headshot generator for LinkedIn?

It depends on how you work. One-time web packs such as HeadshotPro, Aragon AI or BetterPic suit people who want a large batch and can wait. Chatbots work if you like writing prompts. A studio in your browser such as LinkPro guides your selfies and delivers in seconds, with a single headshot as a one-time purchase or unlimited restyles on a weekly subscription.
